The story of Porsche's involvement in the Volkswagen Beetle is well told, so it's hardly surprising that the company's first car borrowed a lot from VW's people's car. The 356 was introduced in 1948 and was fairly revolutionary in its day. The first car featured an aluminium chassis, the lightweight material also being used in the engine crankcase and cylinder heads. Production cars were light, allowing them to make the most of their modest output from the flat-four, air-cooled rear-mounted engines.
A huge success in Europe and America, the 356 went through numerous revisions in its lifetime, being offered in coupe, cabriolet and speedster guises - the later is the most sought after today. The 356 was built right into the 1960s until it was eventually replaced by the 911.
