It seems that the 'green' message is being adopted across the board and the relatively unknown Ford Fiesta Sporting Trophy is making its contribution towards reduced CO2 and sustainable motorsport for the 2008 season. The gravel-based rally series is contested by drivers in identical Ford Fiesta STs prepared by M-Sport to Group N specification. The twist this year is that all cars will run on E85 bio-ethanol, provided by Greenergy for the UK series.
Far from being a disadvantage, bio-ethanol has a higher effective octane rating than unleaded petrol, which allows an improvement in the engine's performance and efficiency. Competitors have 166bhp and 153lb.ft of torque under their right feet, which, in the relatively lightweight Fiesta, makes for an entertaining drive. We expect to see many more race series adopt this fuelling strategy in the near future.
