Chevrolet Coupe E85

Hot rods might not immediately spring to mind as green vehicles, but Chevrolet has built this '34 coupe hot rod to demonstrate that hot rods can be green. Certainly hot rodders are perhaps the ultimate recyclers, it's just the massive V8 engines they usually use to power their unique creations aren't usually so flower friendly. So instead of a thumping big 500bhp V8 featuring under the long bonnet of Chevy's SEMA show car there's a turbocharged 2.0-litre Ecotec four-cylinder tweaked to run on E85 bio-ethanol. Whisper it, but that 2.0-litre engine is basically the same unit usually powering Vectras, Astras and the like.

Still, no rep-mobile ever looked as sensational as this, GM's performance parts division custom building the '34 chassis and using traditional rodding tricks like drilling holes in the suspension to reduce the coupe's overall weight. The interior too features environmentally friendly trimming, Chevrolet claiming it's used 'earth friendly' materials in its creation. It's a driver too rather than merely a show car, GM claiming it's going to rack up a lot of miles to promote the advantages of FlexFuel.
