Using its Solstice GXP roadster as a basis Pontiac has lightened and tightened everything up to create this featherweight racing concept. Every luxury has been thrown away to remove weight, the SD-290 binning its air-conditioning, side glass, passenger seat and even the windscreen; a small aero-screen being fitted instead. The area where the passenger seat once was is now covered by a hard tonneau cover, with other body modifications including a vented hood and front wings and a rear bubble behind the driver's roll cage along with a new rear spoiler.
Those vents aren't just for show as the SD-290's turbocharged 2.0-litre engine has had its power boosted by 30bhp to 290bhp - hence the name. Boosted power isn't the only enhancement that Pontiac's engineers have made, the Solstice SD-290 gaining bigger brakes, revised suspension and a more aggressive wheel and tyre package. In keeping with the racer for the road style the driver is held in by four-point harnesses and a fire extinguisher also features should it all get a bit too hot.
