Think fuel economy and the Ford Explorer isn't the first vehicle that springs to mind. But Ford is using this next-generation Explorer 'America' concept to show its new EcoBoost fuel saving expertise. Using neither hybrid technology nor alternative fuels, the EcoBoost produces efficiency gains of up to 20% by refining existing petrol engine hardware. The use of turbochargers, as well as other fuel-saving devices like weight reduction, energy scavenging and electric rather than hydraulic pumps and auxiliaries, Ford's EcoBoost reduces consumption and emissions without reducing performance.
The Explorer America concept highlights a powertrain line up that includes a four-cylinder 2.0-litre engine that boasts 275bhp and 280lb.ft of torque, or a 3.5-litre V6 with 340bhp - all while providing fuel economy that's some 20-30% better than the existing Explorer. Ford claims with this technology its customers are quicker to recoup their investment compared to hybrid and diesel alternatives, which is bound to be attractive to cost-conscious American consumers.
