Peugeot 207 GT HDi
Peugeot was once the king of hot hatches, thanks to the feisty little 205 GTi and the 309 GTi. In recent years, however; Peugeot seemed to have lost its way. The 206 replaced the much-loved 205, and though its sales success was such that Peugeot couldn't kill it off even with the new 207 going into production, it never captured the imagination of hot hatch fans.
With the advent of the new 207 came a chance for the French company to redeem itself and what better way to do that than dropping its excellent 1.6-litre HDi engine under the bonnet of the first 'hot' version to go on sale, the 207 GT.
Later this year a petrol-engined GT will also be available, but the diesel-powered car is no slouch. Its peak power of 110bhp may not sound like a lot, but it is suitably backed up by 240Nm of torque and never feels slow. There are two cherries on top: nearly 60mpg in the Combined Cycle and an excellent chassis.
