If a car's aversion to fuel stations is one of your first priorities, along with having one of the funkiest small car designs parked outside, then you'd do well to take a test drive in the Toyota Aygo; or its Peugeot 107/Citroen C1 cousins for that matter.

The Aygo range starts from just £6,730 for the 1-litre petrol version, which is one of the cheapest new cars in Britain to insure. Fuel shouldn't cost you too much either, with a Combined Cycle fuel economy figure of 61.4mpg. Correspondingly, this Aygo only emits 109g/km CO2.

Inside, the Aygo is as fresh and modern as the exterior style suggests, with plenty of room for the front passengers, though if you plan on ferrying friends around you may want to opt for the (£250 more expensive) five-door version. With Toyota's famed reliability you should have few running costs other than consumables.
