Gumpert Apollo Sport

Mr Roland Gumpert, a former Audi employee who oversaw many a rallying success working as competitions chief in the Quattro division, won't appreciate me making fun of his name, but when you pin a name to the nose of a supercar you have to accept the consequences and, well, it loses something to an English-speaking audience. The same might be said for the styling of his cars.

It is easy, however, to put those matters aside when the spec sheet for the new Gumpert Apollo Sport is put before you. The Sport version is new in Geneva this year and under the composite skin lies a rather special version of Audi's 4.2-litre V8. Gumpert has added twin turbochargers, releasing 800bhp of German might to the gargantuan rear tyres. Somehow, they don't melt in the process and the company claims a scorching 0-62mph time of 3 seconds... That and an estimated top speed of 233mph suddenly make the name and looks unimportant, don't they?
