In 2004 both our American and Australian cousins were treated to celebratory Minis to commemorate 40 years since the Mini’s sensational win in the Monte Carlo rally in the hands of Paddy Hopkirk. Australia limited their Cooper S Rallye Monte Carlo to just 40 cars, their special gaining Xenon lights with washers – in a nod towards the Mini headlamp dispute in 1966 – Union Jack badges, Monte Carlo badging and a numbered commemorative plaque fitted to the three-spoke steering wheel.
The American MC40 special followed a similar route. It came with some extra features like a 33-EJB numberplate sticker, 40th anniversary rally graphics, magnetic ‘37’ door numbers, two-piece alloy wheels, driving lights, a chrome GB badge and a carbon fibre dashboard cover with a special gauge package. We can think of few greater achievements for Mini to celebrate as a special edition, which makes us wonder why Britain never got its own version.
