You didn't think Audi invested millions in racing diesels at Le Mans just for the fun of it did you? Seriously, diesel is resurgent at the Detroit show and Audi caused the biggest stir with this amazing R8 V12 TDI concept. Not quite as big a surprise as it should have been, thanks to some leaked pictures, but the idea of a turbodiesel supercar is so off the wall that few people believed Audi would actually show such a machine. But it has, and if America needs a kick to demonstrate that diesel engines can be used in performance cars then this is it.
Its 6.0-litre V12 TDI engine develops nearly 500bhp. While that's not exactly earth-shattering in the world of supercars today, the R8 V12 TDI's 737lb.ft of torque is. Use it all and the R8 V12 TDI can get to 62mph in 4.2 seconds and exceed 186mph. All that while using less fuel than a petrol supercar. Impressive stuff.
