Mercedes-Benz SL

The SL has been a phenomenal success for Mercedes and there were more than a few raised eyebrows when the first pictures of the facelifted version landed on our desks here. The quad lamp style of the outgoing car has been replaced by single unit headlamps, their shape not dissimilar to those of the Mercedes CLS. They frame a much larger, and more prominent front grille, the styling changes giving the SL the sort of gawping pulled-behind-the-ears facelift you see on ancient Californian men and women who really should know better. Still, we've only seen the pictures so far, and it's certain to look better in the metal.

What's more exciting than the looks though is that Mercedes has finally fitted the AMG 6.2-litre engine to its flagship hardtop roadster. It'll offer 517bhp under the re-sculpted bonnet and come fitted with a new development of AMG's seven-speed Speedshift automatic transmission. Fast? Certainly. Pretty? We've yet to decide.
