We always knew the Land Rover Discovery was a bit on the chunky side, but were more than a little surprised to see it right up among the motoring heavyweights here with a kerb weight of 2,718kg. The method in which weights are determined might have something to do with this, Land Rover quoting the Discovery's weight - rightly -with all fluids, a spare wheel, toolkit and a 75kg driver - we're not so sure the others are being so honest. Even so, the Discovery is a hefty beast, not so much driving over all sorts of terrain, but flattening it.
At least the Land Rover has its phenomenal off-road ability to bring to the party - the rest of the cars here merely weighty as a result of their super-luxury status. Though we don't doubt the Discovery would benefit hugely from a bit of a diet; after all, this TDV6 model is heavier than its Range Rover relative, and that can't be good for consumption or emissions.
