For quite some time now Mazda has made big noises about a world debut at the British Motor Show. Mazda's sales in the UK have been on the up for a number of years and the launch of a new model at the British Show indicates how important this market is to the Japanese company. This week, Mazda finally announced that a new folding hard top version of the Mazda MX-5 would be revealed in London next month.

We actually expected the announcement of a high-powered Mazda MX-5 MPS, but it is unlikely that the London show would play host to two world debuts. The addition of a folding hard top to the MX-5 is a bit surprising given the light weight simplicity that the MX-5 image is built on. Obviously the new retractable top will add weight and complexity to the car. We'll take a closer look at the show when full specifications will be released.
