Taking its name from the hot wind that blows from the Sahara to the Mediterranean coast the original Scirocco was introduced in 1974. It is unlikely anyone at Volkswagen could have predicted just how popular the sharp coupe would be: the original Giugiaro designed model ran until 1981 and was then replaced by the series II car from 1981 to 1992. In that time it sold over 750,000 examples. Originally powered by modest output engines ranging from 1.1- to 1.7-litres, the Scirocco gained more power in its Series II incarnation.
The second generation car shared the first's wedge-like profile, but was a completely new body, early cars distinguished by the bold Scirocco script under the boot spoiler. Running until 1992 the Scirocco was a much-loved member of the VW line-up. Hardly surprising then that Volkswagen has revived the name for its new Golf-based coupe.
