Looking around for information on Volkswagen's phenomenal W12 Coupe in VW's press archives brings up very little information. It's almost as if this 200+mph car never existed. But it did, and as if to underline its existence it has left a legacy of high-speed records, many of which still stand today. Shown for the first time in 1997 at the Tokyo Motor Show, Volkswagen never seemed sure what to do with its W12-engined supercar. Italdesign looked after the W12's design and it still looks fresh and modern today. The glasshouse ran from the base of the windscreen right over the cabin and down to the rear spoiler, allowing you to see the W12 engine nestled behind the driver and passenger.
A prototype W12 lapped the Nardo circuit in Italy for 24 hours in 2002, setting a number of speed records in the process. Over the 24-hour period it averaged a quite staggering 200.67mph, underlining the durability of the W12 engine. It's a real shame the car never reached production. Some might suggest it was quietly dropped to make way for Volkswagen's other super coupe - the Bugatti Veyron.
