At the New York Auto Show, Mercedes-Benz revealed a 'new' E-class range, but despite 2,000 new parts the appearance of the car is little different to the current E-class. Of more interest was an all-new range-topping version Mercedes call E63 AMG.

Those of you familiar with top of the range Mercedes-AMG models will realise that the 63 refers to the V8's engine capacity of 6.3-litres. Now the sedate looking E-class can be fitted with the snarling new powerplant from AMG pushing out 514bhp and enough torque to pull a cruise liner out to sea. Mercedes will even equip the Estate version with this engine for what has to be one of the ultimate performance estate cars on sale right now.

The E63 AMG is not just about blistering performance though; it should be capable of scything through fast bends and 100s of motorway miles too and the level of standard equipment is particularly high, including a suitably sporting interior and menacing body kit.
