Mitsubishi has been teasing us for a while now with glimpses into the future of the Evo. We have been told that Evo X will be a completely new car that is radically different to all the Evos gone before. The Concept-X show car displayed at the 2005 Tokyo Show is the biggest clue yet as to the car's identity.

Not only does the concept preview a new Mitsubishi family face, its mechanicals are in tact and Mitsubishi provided a pretty detailed account of them. It's all good news too, with the familiar layout of 2-litre turbocharged engine mated to an advanced four-wheel drive system, all hidden under a bespoilered four-door saloon body shape.

There are new clever electronics to help keep the car on the road at the same time as providing the driver with enjoyment, but the most radical new part is the inclusion of a clutchless manual gearbox. We'll have to wait until the 2007 Tokyo Show to find out if it will make production.
