The Evo IX broke cover at the New York Motor Show in March 2005 and though it features a limited number of enhancements over the VIII, Mitsubishi considered it worth the number increment.

Addition of a sophisticated variable valve timing system to the 2-litre turbocharged engine seems to be the most significant update. However, this technology has enabled further development of the engine where big horsepower figures are not necessarily at the expense of drivability.

Enter the new FQ-360 edition, launched at this year's British Motor Show. Peak power, as the name hints, is rated as 366bhp, but equally impressive is its massive torque figure of 492Nm, which even beats the FQ-400 launched a couple of years ago.

British buyers now have a choice of four Evos, from the FQ-300 to this new car, with prices ranging from £28,039 to a still reasonable £35,504. The Evo remains a bargain supercar.
