Petrol heads across the globe will still nod knowingly whenever an Evo V crosses their path as this is revered as one of the best, or certainly one of the first cars to really define the Evolution genre.

Following the world rally regulations changes in 1997, Mitsubishi put the Evo V on sale in 1998, still used as a basis for the Group A rally cars, but without the need for homologation. To that end, Mitsubishi could concentrate on developing the road car as a good car in its own right, and it shows too.

The styling of the Evo V and perhaps the VI, which is a closely-related cousin, is perhaps the most aggressive of the Evo line, featuring bulging wheel arches, protruding fog lights straight from the rally stage and a rear spoiler to rival any other. Performance was pretty attention grabbing too thanks to its 2-litre turbocharged engine that officially produced 276bhp. You'll be hard pushed to find one with such a low figure these days thanks to the 'tunability' of the engine.
