Here's an alternative to the more common Vectra and Mondeo. We were surprised to find so many Saab 9000s available for round about the £1,000 mark. Forget the early nineties pre-facelift cars though, as the later car received some useful upgrades along with a fresher face.

Saab 9000 ownership should be quite rewarding. For starters, despite its age, the 9000 is quite a distinctive shape and you won't lose it in a supermarket car park as easily as some of the others here... Saab interiors are good too and for this money there is decent performance to be had, though if you are keen to reduce the amount of fuel duty that goes Gordon's way you'll be disappointed by the lack of diesel options. Admittedly, the Saab is more expensive to service and repair too, so make sure you do your sums. This could be a heart before head kind of car.
