Vauxhall replaced the Cavalier in the mid-nineties with the rather bland-titled Vectra. The Vectra is no less attractive or distinctive than the Ford Mondeo of the same era, but the Ford had the Vectra beaten dynamically at least.

That didn't stop the Vectra selling in hundreds of thousands, especially to the fleet market. To the family car buyer with £1,000 burning a hole in his pocket, the Vectra is still a good proposition. Like the Mondeo, there are hundreds of late nineties Vectras on sale at any given time. The shape has dated well; though take a good look around the car before you buy as there are many tatty examples.

You may not like the idea of your used car being a rep mobile all its life, but despite likely high mileage, consider the fact that most company fleet cars are serviced regularly and spend a lot of time on the motorway cruising in fifth gear. The mechanicals should be up to a few more years of abuse at the hands of your family.
