The Toyota FT-HS concept revealed in Detroit tops our list of green sports concepts for the simple fact that it offers hope to car enthusiasts worried that an increasing need for environmental awareness might kill off our beloved sports cars.

In reality, this concept focuses more on the car's jaw-dropping looks than its powertrain (which we suspect is still in development). However, Toyota does say that the concept's hybrid system is biased towards performance rather than outright fuel economy, though presumably it would still have the ability to cruise around town on battery power alone, just like its weedier Prius sibling.

A tuned version of the Lexus 3.5-litre V6 is theoretically mated to an advanced motor-generator pack. Together, they are claimed to provide up to 400bhp, which is the kind of figure that the latest 4-litre V8s manage. Of course, the hybrid system would use less fuel than a larger capacity engine. As hinted at by Toyota, the acceleration from a standstill offered by the hybrid system could obliterate rivals. This is based on the fact that electric motors can provide 100% of their maximum torque from zero speed.
