New cars bought after 23 March 2001 could fall into the highest road tax band under the new Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) scheme that comes into force in October,

The move could mean drivers who currently pay £210 per year will be forced to pay up to £245 more in 2009.

Government plans will see drivers of older cars that produce 226g/km or more of carbon dioxide pay £300 from April 2009 and then £455 in 2010.

These changes will add a further £1.2 billion to the Treasury's budget up to March 2011.

A spokesman from the Treasury said: "The system is fair and will only make the heaviest polluters pay."

The Chancellor, Alistair Darling, announced plans for a new 13-tier Vehicle Excise Duty scheme in his Budget in March this year.

It replaces the present system of seven VED bands.
