What is it?

The Ford Fiesta is an institution that's been around in various forms for 32 years. The latest, sixth generation model is certain to continue the success of its predecessors, as it's a dramatic improvement over the car it replaces - a car that was still able to compete for class honours against newer rivals. Ford describes the new Fiesta as its 'smallest big car' and more than mere marketing puff there's some substance to that statement. Certainly the Fiesta feels more mature, larger, better built and styled than ever before, yet it's achieved this without losing its entertaining driving dynamics.

Is it any good?

There was never any doubt that the new Fiesta was going to be good, it was more a question of how much better it would be than its rivals. Quantifiably is the answer, Ford's new Fiesta not only looking fantastic inside and out, but driving with the sort of ability that few rivals can get anywhere near. The chassis is unquestionably the Ford's strongest point, the new Fiesta riding beautifully despite its fine control in the corners. The steering is very crisp and light, the Fiesta's nose going exactly where you want it. Push too hard and it reacts entirely predictably and safely, the ESP only intervening when it absolutely needs to and when it does so it's very subtle.

Space is improved over the outgoing car, the boot notably larger, leg and headroom in the rear competitive in the supermini class. Up front the Fiesta's fascia is smartly styled, the inspiration for the central entertainment controls being derived from mobile phones. The instruments themselves are clear in their neat pod-like cowls, and the quality of the materials is among the very best in the class. Neat touches like an auxiliary input for the stereo, the good value Tech Pack (incorporating keyless entry, Bluetooth connectivity, a push button starter and USB input for the audio), a huge glovebox and in some models ambient interior lighting all help give the Fiesta a premium feel. The two 1.6-litre engines tested - a 118bhp petrol and 89bhp turbodiesel - are refined and very willing performers. Also available at launch are 1.25-litre and 1.4-litre options, with buyers choosing between manual and automatic gearboxes for the 1.4-litre petrol unit.

Should I call the bank manager?

With prices starting at £8,695 you shouldn't have to pester the bank. Ford is being aggressive with its pricing: the entire range is cheaper across the board than the outgoing model. Good projected residual values should mean ownership costs are reduced long-term while more economical engines, cheaper insurance and better equipment levels make the Fiesta a compelling choice for everyone, including those downsizing from larger cars to save some money.

Summary

The Fiesta has survived 32 years by always being among the class leaders. Ford has ensured that the new Fiesta will continue that trend, its new car shooting right to the top among its contemporaries. Rivals will struggle to match the Fiesta's combination of brilliant dynamics, excellent ride, neat, quality interior design and smart exterior lines. Add sensible pricing, good performance, economy and emissions from its range of engines and the Fiesta is a very tough rival for is competition.
