The new Volkswagen Scirocco will hit the race track before its hits the road in the UK.

VW is taking a team of three Sciroccos to compete in the Nurburgring 24 Hours endurance race later this month.

The Scirocco goes on sale in the UK in September, but before then the three race cars face the challenge of the world's toughest motor race.

Each of the racing Sciroccos uses a 296bhp 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine, which is based on the 197bhp version of the road-going Scirocco.

A twin-clutch sequential manual gearbox is also used for the race cars and is again borrowed from the standard Scirocco road car.

Volkswagen is determined to give itself every chance of winning and has brought in famous drivers such as former World Rally Champion Carlos Sainz and double Le Mans winner Hans Stuck.

In 2007, VW managed seventh place with a Golf GTi race car.
