VW will launch three new BlueMotion models at this month's Frankfurt Show, with the latest raft of fuel saving measures being applied to the Polo, Golf and Passat.
All three cars are fitted with the latest turbodiesel engine technology, feature energy recovery and come as standard with stop-start systems, while aerodynamic tweaks and low-drag wheels set the cars apart from regular models.
The headline grabber is the new Polo BlueMotion, with its 87g/km of CO2 and 85.6mpg combined cycle fuel economy. Powered by a new 1.2-litre TDI engine, the frugal Polo has a theoretical range of nearly 850 miles on its 45-litre fuel tank, which will mean just eight tank fill-ups per year according to VW's estimations.
Next up is the Golf, with equally impressive figures of 99g/km of CO2 and 74.3mpg. Thanks to its larger fuel tank, the possible range is virtually 900 miles, yet the Golf BlueMotion will also manage 0-62mph in 11.3 seconds and a top speed of 118mph.
The Passat BlueMotion shares its 1.6-litre TDI engine with the Golf, which results in 64.2mpg on the combined cycle and CO2 emissions of 114g/km. The theoretical range from a 70-litre fill-up is not far off 1,000 miles. A BlueMotion-badged Passat Estate will also be available.
Both the Passat and Golf will be on sale on mainland Europe before the end of the year, with the Polo BlueMotion following early in 2010.
