Facelifted Mazda MX-5 celebrates b'day

Though Mazda's Kiyora concept was the focus of the Japanese maker's stand in Paris, car buyers will be more interested in checking out the new MX-5, which receives an update in time for the 20th anniversary of the MX-5 next year.

What's all the fuss about?

To be honest, there's no one item to make a big fuss about, but Mazda appears to have subtly enhanced the MX-5 in several key areas to make it an even more tempting proposition for buyers in the market for a fun two-door sportscar. Along with a mild facelift, the engineers have been busy updating the engine, gearboxes and chassis, while the bean counters have allowed the standard fitment of more equipment such as DSC on more models. Mazda claims that the MX-5 is more refined too thanks to detail changes in the body, while European buyers get the option of an automatic gearbox for the first time, featuring 'Direct Activematic' and Active Adaptive Shift.

Anything that stands out?

We really like what Mazda has done with the facelift. It adds a much-needed dollop of masculinity to the curvaceous lines of the roadster. The changes are remarkably few, though the front bumper is unmistakable, featuring Mazda's five-point air intake in place of a random ovular shape. New side sills beef up the side profile, as do new alloys, while the pretty rear end features mildly restyled lights. The Roadster Coupé receives its own changes, including a mesh front grille ringed in chrome, a finish that also extends to the headlights and door handles. Inside, the shiny Piano Black trim has been replaced by a classier dark silver finish, while the instruments gain new graphics. Some markets will have the option of lovely Recaro sports seats trimmed in Alcantara and leather.

When can I buy one?

It's likely that Mazda dealers will happily take your deposit from you before the end of the year, though prices have yet to be confirmed. Winter is a good time to buy convertibles too, as you'll find yourself in a good position to haggle. We'd opt for the Roadster Coupé for its perfect blend of coupé and convertible.
