Drinks maker, Coca-Cola, has pledged to assist the Department for Transport's latest campaign to clamp down on drink driving by offering designated drivers free soft drinks.
The government launched its annual campaign against drink driving yesterday and £1.6 million is being spent in an attempt to reduce carnage on the roads.
Police forces around the country have already warned motorists that they will be carrying out more random breath testing than ever before, with new equipment supplied by the DfT also looking for signs of drug taking.
Neil Greig of the Institute of Advanced Motorists said: "The vast majority of drivers believe drinking and driving is socially unacceptable and potentially lethal. But in the run-up to Christmas, daily routines change, sometimes unexpectedly. Extra social occasions with friends, family and colleagues can place those who would not normally drink and drive in tricky situations, such as what to do after the office Christmas party. But it is crucial to decide firmly at the outset either not to drink or to leave the car where it is."
Coca-Cola's offer, which extends to about 2,500 pubs throughout Britain, will soften the blow financially for designated drivers.
