The old Fox is getting on a bit now, but all that does is make it a shrewder purchase than ever. Sure, it's a bit boring inside and out, but drive one and you might be surprised. The steering is sharp, it has masses of headroom (so it feels bigger than it is) and it has the cache of a massive VW roundel stuck on the radiator grille. It's well screwed together too, despite missing the soft tactility we've come to expect from the brand.
Less than £6,500 will get you into the Fox today, and though it's lacking kit, the 1.2 three-pot engine has character, is cheap to run and good even on the motorway. Pay a bit extra for alloys and air conditioning and you'll probably be cheerful. Quality German cars rarely come as legitimately cheap. The 144g/km CO2 rating is terrible, mind.
