Audi A4 allroad quattro

Audi expands its A4 range with a new allroad Avant, the German firm's junior executive donning some green wellies and a Barbour jacket for a countrified transformation.

What's all the fuss about?

Audi might make a pair of proper SUVs in the shape of the Q5 and Q7 models, but before they even existed it had the allroad. Traditionally based on the A6 Avant, Audi has expanded the allroad range into the A4 model line-up. The big-bumpered, wheel-arch protected A4 Avant allroad should appeal to those wanting the A6 allroad's country looks and raised ride height in a slightly more compact and less expensive package. Power comes via three engine choices: two turbodiesels and a 2.0-litre TFSI petrol.

Anything that stands out?

The A4 allroad comes with a specially adapted ESP system that allows more wheelspin to help it in the rough stuff. All the exterior cladding is backed up by some underfloor protection too, making the A4 allroad a good compromise for those needing some proper 4x4 ability but not wanting a chunky SUV.

When can I buy one?

The A4 allroad is already available to order and will be in showrooms and on owners' drives from May. Expect to see plenty of them in ski resort car parks in the next 12 months, then. Prices start at £29,285 for the 2.0-litre TDI quattro. All allroads come with SE levels of specification, though they gain tougher interior cloth, a reversible boot floor cover and a load restraining system too.
