We're more used to some serious environmental tokenism of the Koenigsegg stand of late, the supercar maker usually salving its environmental conscious by powering its 1,000+bhp machines with bio-ethanol. This year the environmental message is a bit less obscured by performance, the NLV Quant a serious look at a 500km range four-seat electric car.
What's all the fuss about?
Koenigsegg usually delivers on its promises no matter how ambitious so when it says it wants to build a 500km range electric car it's a good idea to believe the claim. The Quant is a partnership project with NLV Solar AG and uses an innovative Flow Accumulator Energy Storage (FAES) system rather than a conventional battery to power it. Koenigsegg claims that the FAES can be charged in 15-20 minutes to full capacity giving the NLV Quant a 500km range. It's fast too, the Quant reaching 62mph in just 5.2 seconds and a top speed of 170mph all thanks to a 512bhp electric motor.
What makes it so green?
The NLV Quant uses only electricity, which, if delivered from a carbon neutral source means the NLV Quant produces no CO2 when driving. There are photovoltaic cells all over it to scrounge free power from the sun too. Four people can be carried in comfort and speed, while the 500km range means recharges needn't be a daily occurrence.
When can I buy one?
This one's still strictly a concept but if any firm can turn around such an ambitious green dream then Koenigsegg is it. If the project continues at pace there could be a production version on Koenigsegg's show stand within the next couple of years.
