Toyota's very Verso-tile MPV

Here's some proof that the classic MPV isn't dead just yet, despite having sand kicked in its face by new niche pretenders left, right and centre. The new Verso (nee Corolla Verso) is a family car of the old school - boxy, spacious and built with screaming/adorable kids in mind.

What's all the fuss about?

People carriers aren't usually cars to get the pulse racing, and to be honest this is no exception - unless you're a harangued family head desperate for a car that will serve you and your noisy crew faithfully for mile after mile with astounding ease and practicality. The Verso, says Toyota, has convenience in spades coupled with saloon-like ride quality and handling.

Anything that stands out?

The 'Easy Flat-7' seating system means all five rear seats can be folded easily and quickly, and there's more space for rear seat passengers too. In addition, it's more economical (up to 12 percent more), while being more powerful model-for-model at the same time. A 1.6- and a 1.8-litre petrol engine will be available at launch, as will a revised 2.0-litre D-4D diesel, followed by a stronger 2.2-litre D-CAT 150 derv unit later.

When can I buy one?

Not until later this year.
