Ferrari California debuts in Paris

Even with the financial markets crashing around the world a new Ferrari is always going to be a crowd-pleaser at an international motor show. So the new Ferrari California finally makes its first show appearance in Paris, a long time after it was officially announced back in May.

What's all the fuss about?

There's been a great deal of fuss about the new California, not least because it's not had a proper public airing since it was announced in May. But the Ferrari California has arrived, Ferrari's President Luca Di Montezemolo overseeing the unveiling of the new car in Paris. And it looks even better in the metal than it does in the pictures, even if some of the detailing is a touch fussy - those stacked tailpipes are an acquired taste. It features a number of firsts for Ferrari, most obviously the front-mid V8 engine layout and the folding hardtop roof. Those driving it will experience a new seven-speed dual-clutch transmission too, Ferrari's use of this less hardcore gearbox underlining the different character of the California. Ask Ferrari and on the quiet it'll admit that the California is a car that they specifically targeted at women customers. Wealthy women buyers, of course.

Anything that stands out?

That front V8-engined layout is a first for Ferrari, the front engine and rear transaxle set-up previously reserved for V12 models. The California might be touted as a slightly less focussed model, but it's still got a thumping 454bhp output, which allows it to sprint to 62mph in less than four seconds. Much of the development work was done by a certain Michael Schumacher too, so we expect its ride and handling to be phenomenal. Carbon ceramic brakes are also standard, but really it's the California's roof that's the big talking point - this the first folding hardtop, fully convertible Ferrari has ever produced. It's also one of those Ferraris that looks better in colours other than the company's traditional red paintwork.

When can I buy one?

The California is on sale now, but if your dealer hasn't been in touch with you it's certain you'll be in for a very long wait if you want one. Two years worth of production has already sold out, so order now and you're looking at a 2011 delivery.
