The Nissan Micra may be leaving Nissan's Sunderland plant, but an all-new model will replace it to secure British jobs.
Nissan made the announcement following a visit to its north-east plant by Prime Minister Gordon Brown.
Based on the next generation Micra, details of the new car are scarce.
However, Nissan says it will compete in the supermini sector and has released a rough sketch of what the car might look like.
The sketch shows a sporty coupe shape which is close to that of the 2007 Mixim concept car that Nissan based on the current Micra platform.
Gordon Brown said: "The announcement that a brand new car is to be designed and built in the UK is another important boost to our industry and builds on Nissan's recent commitments to increase investment and jobs at its record-breaking Sunderland plant."
The all-new Micra will be built in Chennai, India and goes on sale in 2010.
Nissan will then unveil its Sunderland-made car on the same platform shortly afterwards.
