Mercedes-Benz CLK AMG
As such, the presence of a Mercedes-
Benz in this quintet of modern muscle cars indicates how the breed has evolved. Mercs used to be known as refined, comfortable cars, but nowadays if there is an AMG badge on the bootlid, you need to approach it with caution.
Taking a page out of BMW's book of engine design, the latest AMG engine no longer relies on just torque alone to vaporise the car's unsuspecting tyres; AMG's new engines are designed to be revved. The CLK 63 AMG features a 6.2-litre V8 boasting 481bhp and a rather naughty 630Nm. Yes, yes, straight line performance is outstanding and it goes around corners smartly too, but if you don't fancy playing hot rods, then it behaves just like any other Mercedes. It is even equipped with a clever automatic transmission. Costs a bit though at over £65,000.
