So you want to be green, safe and have the ability to go anywhere? That's quite a tough combination, but the new Skoda Yeti provides a decent solution to your conundrum. It's one of two 4x4s to feature in the latest round of Euro NCAP crash tests, and good as the big Kia Sorento is safety-wise it's not as green as the chunky Skoda. Combined consumption of 47.1mpg and a CO2 figure of around 159g/km aren't going to trouble the hybrids here, but then those cars will not get you very far into the wilderness.
The Yeti will in its four-wheel drive guise, the square-set Skoda looking every bit as capable as it is. It'll scramble up and down slopes you'd think twice about on foot, wade through rivers and plough through fields. It's safe too, with a full five-star score, its adult protection of 92% the highest recorded in the latest round of NCAP's testing. If you want a safe, rugged and respectably green 4x4 then the Yeti is worth a look.
