We'd love to be able to declare that the Ferrari China 'smashed' a sales record of some sort, but sadly the mere €1.2m (£1.1m) it sold for at auction is probably pocket change to its buyer.
This Ferrari 'China Limited Edition' is a one-off version of the limited-run of 12 599 GTBs produced recently by Ferrari specifically for the Chinese market. It was sold yesterday (November 3rd 2009) in Beijing, with part of the €1.2m selling price going to a sponsorship programme to fund internships at Ferrari for talented Chinese engineering students.
Of the dozen China Limited Edition 599s made, this particular car was selected for a visual overhaul by Chinese artist Lu Hao (pictured here with Michael Schumacher and Ferrari's Marco Mattiacci) who painted it in an incredibly ornate 'cracked glaze' inspired by rare Chinese porcelain. The remaining 11 cars are finished in 'fire red' with a grey roof, a name plaque engraved by Hao himself using ancient Chinese script, and the inclusion of the HGTE handling package as standard.
