New Mazda MX-5 launches in Geneva

Mazda sold 700,000 examples of the first two generations of the Mazda MX-5, making it the most successful sports car of all time. At Geneva, Mazda revealed the third iteration of the concept to an expectant audience, ensuring that the final styling was kept as secret as possible.

I don't know why they went to so much trouble, as most enthusiasts could have predicted the final result. The new car is unashamedly an evolution of the current MX-5, though the overall appearance has been beefed up with more masculine styling cues from the Ibuki concept car and flared wheelarches from the RX-8. In the metal, the new MX-5 could be described as handsome, where its predecessor was pretty. No doubt the aim is to appeal to more men this time around, as the previous car, notwithstanding its renowned driver appeal, had a bit of a girly image.

Though the MX-5 has grown up (and in most other directions), we are assured that the delicate handling balance has been preserved. A 50:50 weight distribution remains, but the agility of the car has been improved by moving the engine 135mm backwards so that most of the car's weight lies within the extended wheelbase. At launch there will be just two engines to choose from: a 125bhp 1.8-litre and the top-of-the range 2.0-litre, with nearly 160bhp on tap. You may notice the demise of the entry-level 1.6-litre unit; the decision to do without it reflects Mazda's decision to move the new MX-5 upmarket.

Further evidence of higher aspirations comes from the classy new interior. In addition to having more space for its two occupants, the cabin has been trimmed in more upmarket materials and has a thoroughly modern design. Though prices have not yet been announced for the UK market, it is likely that the 2.0-litre version will go head-to-head with BMW's new 2.0i Z4 roadster amongst others. If it stands up to comparison against such competitors there is no reason why Mazda couldn't sell another 100,000 or so over the next few years.
