Volvo, as you may remember, was famous for safety, estate cars and indeed, safe estate cars. The safety conscious family, and in particular the female head of the household made up the bulk of the company's buyers. But then something peculiar happened to the market - people stopped buying estates, in favour for large, overbearing SUVs.
Obviously Volvo had to find a way to keep up, but with its reputation for safety, the Swedish company had to go one further and make an SUV that focused on the family's needs and its safety rather than the cool factor. Of course, without even trying to, Volvo has made the perfect car for the 'yummy mummy'. The Cayenne for instance may be seen as a little ostentatious at times; trying too hard if you like, but the Volvo is the exact opposite. It says that your family comes first. It just so happens that it looks the part and can be had with a dirty big V8 under the bonnet...
