Rear-hinged doors might have until now been the preserve of Mazda RX-8 and Rolls-Royce Phantom owners, but Vauxhall is looking to change all that.
The Luton firm has shown a concept of its Meriva mini MPV at the Geneva Show and it features a pair of rear-hinged doors at the back.
Vauxhall is calling the rear-hinged doors on its concept Meriva 'FlexDoors', the design said to aid access to the rear seats.
The passenger doors are able to be accessed without the front doors being opened, Vauxhall claiming its FlexDoor system offers a much wider opening aperture than conventional designs.
Vauxhall also claims that with the doors opening by as much as 90 degrees the Meriva will better enable parents to secure children into the back seats.
Despite the innovative opening system the Meriva concept retains a B-pillar, to ensure that it's able to provide a safe structure in the event of a side impact.
It's not just the clever doors that mark the Meriva out as special, GM's designers giving the compact family car an all-new look that echoes elements of the forthcoming Insignia upper-middle class Vectra replacement.
