Geneva Motor Show 2008

Ford shows its dramatic new Fiesta in Geneva

When Ford first showed its Verve concept and said that it closely resembled what we'd be seeing in its showrooms in production guise, more than a few doubted the company.

However, at an unveil dominated by a soundtrack strangely reminiscent of the '80s, Ford finally unveiled its new supermini contender.

And it seems the Blue Oval has been true to its word and delivered a production car that's lost little of the concept's, err, verve.

It features Ford's so-called 'kinetic design', giving the new Fiesta a serious shot in the arm over the rather plain styling of the outgoing car.

Ford needed to give its supermini contender a style boost too, as many of the Fiesta's rivals had overtaken it in the looks department.

What is certain though is that on the road the Fiesta will be up with the best of them, Ford justifiably proud of its reputation for producing exciting drivers' cars.

The engine line-up will be largely carried over from the existing Fiesta range, though all units will feature enhanced economy, emissions and performance.

Inside, Ford has been equally dramatic with the cabin design. Out goes the blocky cheap-feeling dash of the old car, in its place a far more premium feeling and stylish driving environment.

Both three and five-door versions were unveiled, Ford keen to push its Fiesta as a more grown-up supermini experience with big car features throughout.

Despite this, the new model offers all the advantages of a smaller car, the most efficient Econetic models able to offer a CO2 rating of less than 100g/km.

In among all the fanciful concepts and gloriously unnecessary super and sports cars under the spotlights at Geneva the Fiesta was undoubtedly one of the star reveals.

It'll be on the roads fairly soon too, Ford starting production later this year, prices and exact specifications due to be announced nearer its on-sale date.
