Skoda has shown its range topping new Octavia vRS at Frankfurt boasting the most impressive performance figures in the marque's production history. Thanks to the turbocharged 2-litre four-cylinder FSI engine from the Golf GTi the vRS packs 200bhp and 207lb.ft of torque available all the way from 1,800 to 5,000rpm. Driving the front wheels through a six speed 'box this translates into 0-62mph in 7.3 seconds and a 149mph top speed for the saloon (7.5 seconds and 147mph for the estate).
To match this performance the chassis is lowered and features uprated suspension, uprated brakes and a list of safety features. These include Tyre Pressure Monitoring, ABS with EBD and EBA, traction control and an electronic differential lock.
Available as a hatchback or estate the vRS is set apart from the lesser Octavia models by special 'Zenith' alloy rims showing off green brake callipers, subtle body spoilers, exclusive vRS colours and a bespoke sports interior with aluminium trim, sports seats and restrained vRS badging. As well as looking good the Octavia will also sound good thanks to the custom performance exhaust Skoda has developed specifically for the car.
The previous Octavia vRS appealed to a broad spectrum of buyers from Skoda enthusiasts to the Constabulary who all enjoyed the combination of practicality and performance offered at the familiar keen Skoda prices. The latest car offers improvements in interior quality as well as benefiting from the latest version of VW's medium sized floor pan that has received rave reviews in all of its guises.
With the package topped off by highly competitive equipment levels and the usual Skoda reliability, the new vRS look set to pick up exactly where the previous version left off; as one of the conspicuous performance bargains on the market.
