At this time of year, it is not unusual to see the launch of many special editions as the manufacturers attempt to kick start holiday sales. Lamborghini has just launched the Gallardo SE (Special Edition), though you won't be surprised to hear that this Gallardo features more than just a few cheap stickers and a set of alloy wheels.
Well actually the SE Gallardo does feature alloys, though there is nothing cheap about the stunning bespoke 19-inch 'Callisto' 5-spoke rims, with a thin sliver of Pirelli P-Zero Corsa rubber wrapped around each. Behind the wheels lie grey or yellow brake callipers according to the buyer's preference. The biggest external visual difference between the SE and the regular Gallardo comes from the contrasting 'Nero Noctis' black on the engine cover, roof, front and rear spoilers and on the side mirrors. Six colours are available for the main bodywork.
Inside, the main body colour is carried over onto the partially perforated leather and stitching. In the classy white car at the show that's fine, but imagine what it will look like in yellow or even green. A rear-facing camera projects images onto the in-dash screen to help with parking. Only 250 SEs are being produced worldwide, each with its VIN on a Lamborghini shield. The shield is echoed on the headrests.
The Gallardo SE receives an uprated engine, reducing the 0-62mph time to just four seconds, and increasing the top speed to 197mph. Apparently the suspension is stiffened and the gear ratios are shortened as well. A small number of Gallardo SEs will be imported into the UK at a price of about £134,000. Deliveries to the lucky few will start shortly after the car's public debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
