Estate cars used to be a sensible choice, being bought by families wanting a practical car. But somewhere in their recent evolution there's been a Frankenstein-esque mutation, especially among the German manufacturers. That explains the actions of AMG, Mercedes-Benz's tuning wing. It has taken a perfectly sensible new C-Class estate and squeezed its 457bhp, 6.
3-litre V8 engine under the bonnet, creating the C 63 AMG Estate. To get that mighty powerplant in there the bonnet now features 'power domes', these just part of the muscular visual transformation.
Forget though all the additional wings and scoops, big wheels and huge exhausts, and concentrate instead on the numbers. The new C 63 AMG Estate can sprint to 62mph in just 4.6 seconds and will be straining at its electronic 155mph leash in no time at all. With performance like that you'll need to make sure that whatever you've got in the capacious boot is secured tightly.
The other numbers, which might matter to some, but let's not kid ourselves here, is a boot that's able to offer 485 to 1,500 litres of capacity. Thankfully, that boot comes fitted with load lashing points, bag hooks, covered side compartments, a collapsible shopping crate and a luggage cover and retaining net.
Perfect for sales reps in a serious hurry, the C 63 Estate will arrive early in 2008. Prices have yet to be confirmed, but £56,000-57,000 should buy you Merc's go-fasta family hauler.
