The Mercedes-Benz display in Frankfurt occupied an entire hall at the show and one of the crowd-drawing displays was this car, the Vision R 63 AMG. Said to be a "near-series" (read production intent) concept car, the Vision R is a sporting derivative of the new Mercedes-Benz R-class. The low slung long wheelbase Vision R has amazing presence thanks to its rakish flanks and a mean looking nose treatment featuring new front skirts and bumpers. At the back an AMG sports exhaust protrudes menacingly from under the new rear spoiler. Resplendent in Dark Titanium, Mercedes calls it a "sporty and dynamic trendsetter".
The Vision R houses six occupants and whisks them across continents in generous space and opulence thanks to its large dimensions and an all-new 6.3-litre V8. The interior of the Vision R features Nappa leather covered AMG sports seats, an AMG sports steering wheel and an AMG instrument cluster reinforcing the sporting exterior looks. The majority of the interior of the show car was coloured to match the exterior panels with black lacquered surfaces on the front centre console. The equipment list features all that you'd expect for a GT for six: a DVD player, multi-zone climate control and folding tables ensure occupants travel in comfort, as well as style. Not only cosseting passengers, the Vision R is said to offer a great driving experience.
The new naturally aspirated V8 produces 510bhp and 465lb.ft of torque and drives all four wheels through an AMG Speedshift automatic 'box with paddle shift. Behind the massive 21-inch 5-spoke alloys (shod with 265/40 R21 tyres) lurk appropriately massive AMG high performance brakes charged with handling the task of shedding all the kinetic energy accumulated oh so quickly by those 510 horses; witness 0-62mph in five seconds and an easily obtainable, electronically limited, 155mph maximum. Expect a production version to be announced before next summer.
