Mazda freshens up the Mazda2 supermini at Frankfurt

The sub-compact Mazda2 has been on the market since January 2003, designed with European tastes in mind, and even produced at one of parent company Ford's plants in Spain. Its good looks, driving dynamics and spacious interior have earned it many friends; 90,000 across Europe in fact. Entering its third year of production, Mazda decided to enhance the range and chose the Frankfurt Show to debut the changes.

On the outside, the new Mazda2 gets new lights at both ends, the fresh lamps featuring distinct circular units behind the main covers, and the items at the rear taking on the clear appearance used throughout most of the Mazda range. At the front, some models gain sporty looking new fog lights. Lighting aside, other aesthetic changes include new alloy wheels, a black C-pillar and an extended choice of 11 paint colours. In the metal, the subtle changes enhance the unique curvy-box proportions of the Mazda2.

Inside, new colours and new fabrics for the seats and door trim enhance the quality feel, with the basic models in particular benefiting from the upgrade. There is also a new range of stereo systems, and the option of steering wheel mounted stereo controls for the first time.

Under the bonnet, the range of 1.25, 1.4 and 1.6-litre petrol engines remains unchanged, but the 1.4-litre common-rail turbodiesel (accounting for 27% of sales) has received a significant upgrade, allowing the engine to produce emissions within the Euro IV regulations without the need for a costly particulate trap. This unit puts out 67bhp and 118lb.ft of torque at the same time as sipping fuel, so the latest enhancements are sure to further this model's appeal, especially against stiffening competition.
