Walk into a Peugeot dealership and you'll now be faced with a choice of three small cars. The 107 joins the popular 206 supermini and quirky 1007, offering buyers an inexpensive sub supermini that's both fun and practical. Available in either three or five-door guises in 'Urban' trim, there's just one 1.0-litre engine choice mated to either a standard five-speed manual, or Peugeot's 2-Tronic automatic transmission. Fuel consumption with either transmission should comfortably exceed 50mpg, the official combined consumption figure quoted at 61.4mpg. Despite this frugality and the 14.9 second 0-60mph time, the willing three-cylinder powerplant feels fairly eager, and all produces a characterful, throbbing engine note.
It may be tiny outside, but it's certainly not short of space inside. The rear seats are genuinely useable, though the legroom is admittedly at the expense of a particularly capacious boot - it's very small. Specification is decent enough too, especially when you consider it's attractive pricing. Safety equipment includes twin airbags and electronic stability control and ABS with an electronic brake force distributer, while there's electric windows up front, a CD player and central locking on all cars. Neat touches like the auxiliary socket for MP3 players on the CD stereo underline the thought that's been put into the 107, its interior build and quality bettering its eastern rivals. A slick gearbox, accurate steering and its peppy engine make it an enjoyable and able drive around town, while it's remarkably refined at motorway speeds, too. As an entry to motoring, or as a second car the 107 is an inexpensive and impressive choice.
+ Fun to drive, character, inexpensive
- Tiny boot, Aygo cousin smarter looking
