BMW reveals most extreme M3 yet

While enthusiasts the world hoped that BMW would eventually build an even more driver-focused CSL version of the M3, nobody realised just what the barmy Bavarians had up their sleeves. Say hello to the 450bhp M3 GTS.

Any new car painted bright orange will get our attention, but it's the bits that are black that should be of most interest. Obviously that includes the lovely 19-inch lightweight competition-spec alloys and unpainted carbon fibre roof, but the dark chin spoiler and massive rear wing are even more indicative of this car's remit.

Essentially, the GTS is a track day toy for the wealthy, though it's also one that is road legal, so it can theoretically be driven to the track. Reaffirming its raison d'être is the fitment of a half rollover cage and fire extinguisher where the rear seats usually reside in the regular M3 Coupé, while up front is a pair of deep bucket seats and the option of full racing-style harnesses to strap you and your hapless passenger in.

And strapping in is a good idea. BMW has not only dropped about 200kg of weight from the regular car, but also increased the engine size from 4.0- to 4.4-litres, pushing maximum power up to about 450bhp. That's over 30bhp more than the (hardly slow) current model. Power is fed to the rear wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Keeping all that performance in check is adjustable racing suspension and an upgraded brake system, along with super-sticky low-profile tyres.

Prices for Britain and Ireland have yet to be announced, though the car goes on sale in May 2010. Apparently, homologation for road use is an option, though why wouldn't you?
