Just what the world needs - a bigger Cadillac

Just what the world needs - a bigger Cadillac

Cadillac's Escalade is already a favourite with premiership footballers and hip hop artists alike for its look-at-me styling and bulk. Well, now there's an even bigger version, called the ESV, making its world debut at this week's Detroit Motor Show.

According to Cadillac, the Escalade ESV (does it stand for Extremely Stupid Vehicle?) "sets new standards for size, power, technology" in the large luxury SUV market. Regular little Escalade too diminutive for you? Well how about a further 21 inches in length? Elsewhere, the ESV is pretty much as found on the current Escalade, though the third row passengers get their own 8-inch DVD screens now.

Just as well there's a powerful engine to push all that weight around. The ESV is fitted with a new 6.2-litre V8 engine, delivering over 400bhp and a useful 565Nm of torque for towing the odd cruise liner or two. The ESV can be specified with 18-inch wheels, but something tells me that even the optional 22-inch 7-spoke items pictured will be too small for some...

Launched alongside the ESV (bizarrely to the cacophony of punk rockers Blink 182) was another version of the Escalade, displayed in black naturally, with huge chrome wheels to match the recently updated (and even shinier) Escalade front grille. The Escalade EXT is basically an extended cab SUV, which we rarely have the need for in Europe. It seats five and can carry a large amount of outdoor activity 'stuff' on its pick-up bed. It's powered by the same new V8 engine.
