Aston Martin Rapide concept previews new range-topper
In the impressive Cobo Hall arena, Aston Martin wheeled out each of the cars in its current line-up before stunning the crowds with a new four-door concept car. Demonstrating the car's spacious rear, Aston Martin Chairman and CEO Dr. Ulrich Bez helped a model and a rather large dog out, in front of thousands of gawping journalists.
Though undoubtedly a graceful design, we can't help but think that the Rapide is just too much like the rest of the range. It looks very like a stretched DB9 with the V8 Vantage rear end grafted on. The characteristic upwards arcing doors are retained, and the rear doors follow the same elegant movement.
Inside, as you'd expect, is a little special. Despite being just 4cm higher than the DB9, the Rapide comfortably seats four in individual leather-trimmed sports seats. As with all new Astons, the car is started by pressing a glass starter button that pulses red when the ignition is switched on. There are all manner of materials used, including wood, aluminium, glass, leather and even carbon fibre. The transparent roof is made of polycarbonate, giving the cockpit an airy feel despite the low roofline.
Mechanically, the Rapide shares the DB9's V12, though uprated to cope with the extra weight. This unit is mated to a ZF 'Touchtronic' transmission. Behind the polished wheels lie carbon brake discs, hinting that this Aston is designed to be driven just as hard as any other. Will the Rapide be made? We think so.
